The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to rethink his public pledge to serve only one term if elected. Speaking during his monthly media chat, Wike backed former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai, who has also criticised Obi’s position. He argued that circumstances could change once Obi assumes the presidency and that it would be imprudent to make definitive statements about limiting himself to a single term.
Wike emphasized that Obi’s assurance of a one‑term presidency is not a guarantee. The complexities of governance and evolving conditions could compel him to seek a second or even a third term. He also questioned Obi’s political strategy, noting the candidate’s reluctance to disclose which party platform he intends to use for his potential presidential bid. In contrast, politicians such as Atiku and Amaechi have been more transparent about their intentions, leaving Obi’s supporters in suspense.
The FCT minister cautioned that Obi’s promise of a single term could be misleading and urged him to refrain from making such statements. He argued that Nigerians should not be deceived by assurances that cannot be guaranteed, given the inherent uncertainties of politics and governance. This exchange underscores the ongoing debate about political leadership and accountability in Nigeria, as politicians face increasing scrutiny to demonstrate transparency and a commitment to good governance.
