Price of cooking gas reduces in Nigeria

The average price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, fell on a month‑on‑month basis. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the cost of a 12.5 kg cylinder dropped to N20,609.48 in July 2025, down from N21,010.56 in June—a decline of 1.19 percent. The NBS released this data in its July 2025 LPG Price Watch, which outlines current market trends for cooking gas in Nigeria.

On a year‑on‑year basis, however, the price has risen sharply. Compared with July 2024, the cost of a 12.5 kg cylinder increased by 44.51 percent, from N14,261.57 to N20,609.48. The report notes that the average retail price for refilling a 12.5 kg cylinder fell by 1.91 percent month‑on‑month (from N21,010.56 in June 2025 to N20,609.48 in July 2025) while rising 44.51 percent year‑on‑year.

A regional analysis shows notable price disparities. Imo, Delta, and Rivers states recorded the highest LPG prices during the period, whereas Kebbi, Nasarawa, and Kwara states had the lowest. These variations likely reflect differences in transportation costs, taxes, and local market conditions. As of 1 September 2025, the average price of a 12.5 kg cylinder in Abuja and its environs was around N15,000, considerably lower than the national average, underscoring the influence of regional market forces.

The NBS report provides valuable information for consumers, businesses, and policymakers, enabling more informed decisions about the LPG market. Ongoing monitoring of LPG prices will help identify trends and patterns, contributing to a better understanding of Nigeria’s energy sector.
