Nkemkanma Kama, the lawmaker representing Ohaozara, Onicha, and Ivo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has formally withdrawn his membership from the Labour Party. The announcement was made through a letter addressed to the Ward Chairman of the party in Amaze Ward, Ishiagu Community, Ivo Local Government Area. In the letter, Kama explained that his decision resulted from extensive consultations with his family, political associates, and other stakeholders, and that, after careful consideration, he concluded the step was necessary for the greater good of his constituents.
Kama, who won his seat in the 2023 general election under the Labour Party banner, expressed deep appreciation to the party’s leadership and members—particularly in Abia State—for their support during the election. His departure comes amid a recent leadership crisis within the Labour Party that has prompted several stakeholders to defect to other parties. Although Kama did not disclose which party he intends to join next, there are indications he may be considering the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The lawmaker’s exit is significant given his position in the House of Representatives, and it may have implications for the political landscape in Abia State and beyond. As the political terrain continues to evolve, observers will watch how Kama’s move impacts his constituents and the parties involved. The Labour Party, grappling with its leadership crisis and the loss of key members, will be closely monitored for its ability to retain members and maintain a strong presence in the political arena in the coming months. Meanwhile, Kama’s next steps are expected to attract considerable attention, potentially shaping Nigeria’s broader political dynamics.
