Cardi B cleared of 2018 assault charge in California court

A California court has ruled in favor of American rapper Cardi B, dismissing a $24 million lawsuit alleging she assaulted a security guard in 2018. The plaintiff, Emani Ellis, claimed that Cardi B, who was pregnant at the time, cut her cheek with a fingernail and spat on her at a Beverly Hills obstetrician’s office.

The case was heard by a 12-member Los Angeles court jury, which deliberated for less than an hour before reaching a unanimous verdict in Cardi B’s favor. The jury found that Ellis had failed to provide sufficient evidence to support her allegations of physical assault by the Grammy-winning artist.

During the two-day trial, Cardi B testified that she had feared Ellis would disclose her pregnancy to the public. While acknowledging an argument between the two, Cardi B maintained that it did not escalate into physical violence. In a statement after the verdict, she reiterated her denial of the allegations, saying, “I will say it on my deathbed. I did not touch that woman. I did not touch that girl. I didn’t lay my hands on that girl.”

Cardi B also warned that she would take strong action against anyone who brings a “frivolous lawsuit” against her in the future. The rapper stated that she would counter-sue and seek compensation, emphasizing that such actions are “not OK.”

The lawsuit’s dismissal marks the end of a lengthy and highly publicized legal battle for Cardi B. The case had been livestreamed, generating significant media attention and public interest. With this verdict, Cardi B can now focus on her music and other pursuits without the burden of this lawsuit. The outcome also highlights the importance of providing substantial evidence in support of allegations, as the jury’s decision underscores the need for credible proof in such cases.
