The Federal Government of Nigeria has allocated more than ₦90 billion to support the education and welfare of over 400,000 students in the country’s tertiary institutions. This funding is part of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), introduced by President Bola Tinubu to broaden access to higher education and ease the financial burden on students and their families.
According to Minister of Information and National Orientation Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the fund provides direct financial assistance that covers tuition fees as well as upkeep allowances. By doing so, it enables students to continue their studies without disruption due to economic hardship. Since its rollout, the scheme has been highlighted as one of the administration’s flagship education interventions.
As of 6 August 2025, disbursements had reached ₦86.3 billion. Of this amount, ₦47.6 billion was allocated to institutional fees across 218 beneficiary institutions, while ₦38.7 billion was paid directly to students as upkeep allowances. A total of 780,089 students have registered on the platform, and 449,039 have already benefited from the scheme.
Idris urged Nigerians to evaluate government initiatives beyond political or religious affiliations, emphasizing that NELFUND is essential for keeping students in school. He reiterated that President Tinubu’s leadership is focused on the collective good of all Nigerians, irrespective of party or faith.
The minister’s statement underscores the government’s commitment to education and welfare, aiming to create a more prosperous Nigeria. NELFUND represents a significant step toward that goal, providing critical support to students and their families. As the scheme continues to expand, it is expected to positively impact the education sector, allowing more students to pursue higher education without financial constraints and contributing to the country’s long‑term development.
