PDP Convention: Party unity bigger than personal ties - Gov Fintiri to Wike, others

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is preparing for its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, who chairs the party’s National Convention Committee, stressed the importance of unity and warned that personal relationships must not outweigh the party’s interests.

In a statement to journalists on Wednesday, Fintiri addressed attempts by some members, including Nyesom Wike and his allies, to influence the convention process. He asserted that no individual or group would be allowed to disrupt the exercise and emphasized that party disputes should be settled internally rather than aired in public forums. True party loyalty, he said, requires resolving issues within the party instead of dragging them to the media.

Fintiri affirmed that the convention committee is committed to delivering a transparent and credible exercise. He outlined the procedural steps: candidates must purchase forms, file their nominations, and face delegates in accordance with the PDP’s democratic traditions. The party secretariat for the convention is fully operational, and efforts are underway to ensure a smooth and credible process.

The governor urged members to prioritize the collective interest of the party over personal ambitions, warning that selfish demands could undermine the convention. Despite internal disagreements, he expressed confidence that the upcoming event will demonstrate the PDP’s resilience and readiness to reclaim national leadership.

Overall, Fintiri’s comments highlight the need for unity and adherence to democratic principles as the PDP moves toward a crucial step in reestablishing itself as a major force in Nigerian politics. With the committee’s commitment to transparency and credibility, the party is poised to advance in a positive direction, placing the interests of the party and its members above individual ambitions.
