The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) held an emergency meeting in Lagos on Thursday, attended by national executives from across the country. The closed‑door session ran from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and was not open to journalists. Key party leaders were present, including Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, National Chairman Dr. Agbo Major, and Secretary General Dr. Oginni Olaposi.

Dr. Aniebonam, who also founded the NNPP, said the meeting addressed urgent issues affecting the party nationwide. A primary concern was the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) delay in uploading the party’s new national executives, a step required for the NNPP to participate actively in elections. The party has written to INCE multiple times and demanded that elections be halted until the issue is resolved, warning that unresolved matters could lead to litigations that would impact Nigeria’s electoral process. Dr. Aniebonam expressed regret that, despite court directives, INEC has not taken the necessary steps, insisting that the commission must stop all activities, including elections, until the NNPP’s correct logo and new leadership are recognized.

Other topics discussed included the unauthorized use of the party’s name by expelled members and approaches from presidential aspirants seeking to use the NNPP platform for the 2027 election. The NNPP announced it will present its own candidate for 2027 and is open to collaborating with like‑minded parties. Unlike in 2023, the party will not award its ticket to a single aspirant; instead, all aspirants will compete in primaries and be chosen by members. Additionally, the NNPP plans to launch a nationwide membership drive soon.

The party’s concerns about INEC’s delay underscore the importance of resolving internal issues and ensuring that all parties can participate fairly in the electoral process. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 election, the NNPP’s efforts to establish a strong presence and field a competitive candidate will be closely watched. Its commitment to democratic principles—such as primaries and member participation—represents a positive step toward strengthening internal processes and improving its chances of success in future elections.
