Troops of Operation Delta Safe have thwarted oil‑theft activities valued at N545,872,819 in August, according to the Defence Headquarters. The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj‑Gen Markus Kangye, disclosed the figures during a monthly military‑operations briefing in Abuja.
During the operation, forces recovered a substantial quantity of stolen petroleum products: 619,236 litres of crude oil, 106,147 litres of illegally refined diesel, 5,785 litres of kerosene and 2,650 litres of petrol. They also destroyed 97 illegal refining sites and seized more than 488 pieces of equipment, including storage tanks, boats and cooking ovens.
Seventeen suspects were arrested in Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa states. The detainees were found in possession of arms, ammunition, explosives and N1.7 million in cash.
The operation underscores the Nigerian military’s commitment to combating oil theft and related criminal activities, which threaten the nation’s economy by costing billions of naira each year. By dismantling illegal refineries, recovering stolen products and confiscating weapons, the military aims to reduce economic losses and improve regional security. The success of Operation Delta Safe demonstrates the armed forces’ determination to protect Nigeria’s natural resources and uphold the rule of law, and they will continue to work tirelessly to safeguard the country’s stability.
