Ebola outbreak: NCDC issues public safety advisory as Nigeria monitors DR Congo

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a public‑health advisory in response to the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Although no cases have been detected in Nigeria, the agency is closely monitoring the situation to ensure early detection and preparedness.

In a statement released on Saturday, the NCDC urged the public to adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of transmission. These include regular handwashing with soap and running water, avoiding contact with individuals showing Ebola symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and unexplained bleeding, and refraining from consuming bushmeat. The agency also emphasized the importance of properly cooking animal products.

Healthcare workers have been instructed to strictly follow infection‑prevention and control protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment when managing patients. Individuals who have recently traveled to affected areas and develop symptoms are encouraged to contact the NCDC hotline or their State Ministry of Health immediately.

The advisory, which is available in full on the NCDC website, outlines the steps the public and healthcare workers should take. It is a precautionary measure aimed at preventing the spread of Ebola in Nigeria and reflects the country’s broader effort to strengthen health security and protect its citizens.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among nations to curb the spread of infectious diseases. Nigeria’s proactive approach demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding public health. As the situation evolves, the NCDC is expected to maintain a heightened state of alert, working closely with international health organizations to keep the country Ebola‑free.
