A deadly ambush at the BUA Cement Company in Okpella, Nigeria, has resulted in the killing of eight Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel by suspected kidnappers. The attack occurred on Friday at approximately 10:00 p.m. when armed men opened fire on a convoy at the company’s entrance. The NSCDC officers were escorting five Chinese expatriates back to base after a routine patrol; they were members of a security team attached to the cement factory.
The assailants, equipped with sophisticated weapons, killed eight NSCDC operatives and one civilian. Four of the expatriates were rescued unharmed thanks to a swift response from the Corps, but one expatriate was reportedly abducted during the incident. Additionally, four other NSCDC officers were injured and are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
State Commandant of the NSCDC, Gbenga Agun, visited the scene and the injured officers in the hospital. When approached for comment, NSCDC Public Relations Officer in Edo, Efosa Ogbebor, declined to speak, noting that a formal statement would be issued by the Corps’ national headquarters.
The attack underscores the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly concerning kidnapping and armed violence, and raises serious concerns for the safety of both local and foreign nationals. As the investigation proceeds, Nigerian authorities are likely to face increased pressure to strengthen security measures and protect citizens and businesses from such threats. The loss of NSCDC personnel in the line of duty is a significant blow to the organization, highlighting the risks faced by security forces and the need for continued support and resources to ensure their safety and effectiveness.
