Nineteen northern states in Nigeria have united to urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate action against underperforming ministers and security chiefs. The appeal was issued by the Northern Ethnic National Forum, a coalition of regional leaders, through its convener Dominic Alancha. Alancha warned that the current state of governance is inadequate to confront the numerous challenges facing Nigerians, especially those in the north.
The forum attributes the shortcomings to many ministers’ failure to translate policies into tangible results, connect with grassroots communities, or build the political goodwill needed to strengthen the administration’s standing. Consequently, the coalition is calling for a comprehensive dissolution and reshuffle of the Federal Executive Council, arguing that decisive action is essential amid a “multi‑dimensional crisis” gripping the nation.
This crisis is marked by rampant insecurity: communities are being ravaged daily, farmers cannot access their fields, and highways have become death traps. The forum’s statement stresses the urgency of removing underperforming security chiefs given the dire security situation.
The call reflects growing concerns among Nigerians about the government’s capacity to address the country’s myriad challenges. President Tinubu’s response will be closely watched, as it carries significant implications for the government’s ability to govern effectively and meet citizens’ needs. As events unfold, it remains to be seen what measures the government will adopt to address the forum’s concerns and restore stability and security to the affected regions.
