Withdraw 5% Petroleum Product Tax Or Face Nationwide Strike, TUC Tells FG • Channels Television

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has vehemently rejected the Federal Government’s proposal to impose a 5 percent tax on petroleum products, calling it an “act of economic wickedness” against an already overburdened populace. The union warns that the policy would deepen Nigerians’ suffering, cripple businesses and push millions further into poverty.

Nigeria is currently grappling with the fallout from subsidy removal, soaring fuel prices, food inflation and a declining naira. In this context, the TUC argues that adding another levy on petroleum products would be a deliberate attempt to compound citizens’ hardship, accusing the government of using Nigerians as “sacrificial lambs” in its economic experiments.

In a statement signed by President General Festus Osifo and Secretary General N. A. Toro, the TUC demanded that the government abandon the tax plan. The union cautioned that failure to do so could trigger nationwide resistance, including the possibility of strike action. It has instructed its state councils, affiliates and structures to remain vigilant and ready for further action.

The TUC also called on civil‑society organisations, professional bodies, student unions, market associations, faith leaders and patriotic Nigerians to stand in solidarity against policies that seek to further impoverish citizens. It emphasised that Nigerians deserve economic justice, not endless punishment.

The government’s proposal has sparked widespread concern about its potential impact on the economy and the population. The TUC’s rejection adds to a series of disputes between the government and labour unions over economic policies. As the situation unfolds, the threatened nationwide resistance could have significant consequences for the country, and the government’s next steps will be closely watched by Nigerians awaiting a resolution to the ongoing economic challenges.
