The William O. Lockridge Community Foundation recently completed an international educational and cultural exchange program in Luanda, Angola. Four Washington, DC students—Maegan Godoy, Carlone Leach, Taylor Muie, and Cire Wilson—served as WOLCF International Ambassadors, representing Wards 7 and 8. From July 19 to 28 they participated in a series of activities designed to promote global awareness, leadership skills, and cultural ties between the United States and Angola.

During their visit the ambassadors met officials at the U.S. Embassy in Luanda, where they learned about diplomatic relations, foreign policy, and careers in international service. A tour of the National Parliament gave them insight into Angola’s legislative process and political structure. They also experienced a basketball exchange with a professional athlete, illustrating the unifying power of sports, and visited the Slavery Museum, deepening their understanding of the trans‑Atlantic slave trade.

The program highlighted Angola’s rich heritage through lessons on Queen Nzinga Mbande, the 17th‑century warrior queen who resisted Portuguese colonization and the slave trade. The ambassadors explored the historic Congo and Ndongo Kingdoms, met the King of the Ndongo Kingdom, and engaged directly with the country’s cultural legacy.

This was the fifth delegation organized by WOLCF, following trips to Cameroon, Ghana, Benin, and Madagascar. The foundation remains committed to providing life‑changing opportunities for youth from underrepresented communities, equipping them with the tools, experiences, and confidence to lead in a globally connected world. Through its International Ambassadors Program, students return home inspired, informed, and ready to share their experiences with peers and the broader community.

WOLCF’s efforts to promote cultural exchange and global awareness offer young people valuable experiences and skills that benefit their communities and societies at large. As the foundation continues to organize such programs, it is poised to make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of many young people, empowering them to become active global citizens and leaders.
