Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has urged FIFA to expedite a decision on a possible three‑point deduction for South Africa in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Speaking to reporters on Monday, ahead of his team’s match against South Africa on Tuesday, Chelle highlighted that the deduction stems from South Africa’s use of Teboho Mokoena in a March game against Lesotho despite his suspension for accumulated yellow cards. FIFA regulations stipulate that fielding an ineligible player can result in disciplinary measures, including point deductions.
Chelle stressed that his immediate priority is his own squad’s preparation. “The talk about yellow cards, FIFA needs to manage it; this isn’t my problem. My problem is my players first because they are focused on the South Africa clash,” he said. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the necessity for a swift resolution, adding, “The reality, I think FIFA needs to manage it quickly.”
The qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are underway, with Nigeria’s Super Eagles and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana both vying for tournament spots. A three‑point penalty could markedly affect South Africa’s chances of advancing. FIFA’s ruling on the matter remains pending, and its outcome could influence the dynamics of the qualification campaign. As the matches continue, teams and fans will be watching closely for FIFA’s decision, hoping for clarity in the competition.
