Speaking to Lusaka Times, the coach highlighted that her side had posted the highest goal tally and the meanest defense across all group matches, not merely the head-to-head encounters.
“We scored the most goals in this group, and we conceded the least goals,” Häuptle said. “Sometimes I’m not sure if we do the right things with this kind of regulations because it feels completely weird that we are out.”
The Swiss tactician’s assessment underscores a growing debate regarding the suitability of head-to-head metrics in multi-team tie scenarios, particularly when those metrics discard results against the fourth-placed team in the group. In this instance, Zambia’s superior overall goal difference and total goals scored were rendered irrelevant by a rule set that isolates a subset of fixtures.
