Thunderstorm damages Otukpo-Nsukka transmission line — TCN — Daily Nigerian

A thunderstorm on September 3 caused significant damage to Nigeria’s power infrastructure when a major transmission line snapped. The 132 kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven line was compromised after a cut conductor fell near Tower 97, igniting a fire that destroyed a nearby house and a car parked beneath the line. Two cows also died in the incident, but, according to Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), no human lives were lost.

A team led by Mr. Tom Inugonum, Regional Manager of TCN’s Enugu Region, was promptly dispatched to assess the damage and begin repairs. The Quick Response Line Maintenance Team has started dismantling the damaged section to prepare for the installation of a new conductor. Despite the disruption, TCN has ensured that there is no power loss in the Nsukka area, which is normally supplied through the affected line. An alternative supply route has been arranged via the Otukpo 132 kV Transmission Substation to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for onward distribution to consumers.

The incident underscores the importance of respecting power infrastructure and adhering to safety guidelines around transmission facilities. TCN has reiterated that the public must avoid building, parking, or conducting any activities within the transmission lines’ Right of Way (RoW), as such encroachments pose serious risks to lives and property. The company remains committed to maintaining a stable and secure national grid while ensuring public safety. Its swift response and ongoing repairs demonstrate dedication to providing reliable electricity to Nigerians, and TCN will continue to work toward minimizing disruptions and protecting consumers from adverse effects.
