A Commissioner‑designate in Edo State, Kassim Afegbua, has criticized the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for proposing to serve only one term if elected president in 2027. Afegbua described the proposal as “laughable” and “impossible” during an appearance on Channels Television’s *Sunrise Daily* program on Wednesday. He argued that four years is insufficient time to implement meaningful transformations in Nigeria and emphasized that a single term would be inadequate to effect positive change.

Afegbua cautioned against promises that seem unrealistic, stating that nobody should be led to believe that one term is enough to address Nigeria’s complex challenges. His comments come as the country prepares for its next presidential election, scheduled for 2027, and reflect concerns among some stakeholders that more time is needed to implement and sustain reforms.

Nigeria has faced numerous development challenges, including economic growth, infrastructure development, and security concerns. Historically, presidents have typically served two terms, which some argue provides continuity and stability in governance, while others contend that term limits can prevent the concentration of power and promote democratic accountability. The debate over Obi’s single‑term proposal is likely to continue as the 2027 election approaches, highlighting skepticism about the practicality of a one‑term presidency in addressing Nigeria’s deep‑seated issues.
