Fuel scarcity imminent as tanker drivers shun depots Monday over union dispute - NUPENG

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) has accused the Dangote Group of using its free premium motor spirit distribution initiative as a ploy to crush union members and other businesses in the country’s downstream sector. NUPENG’s National President, Williams Akporeha, described the move as a “Greek gift” intended to deceive Nigerians.

Dangote Group recently announced a new retail and ex‑depot price template, which led to a drop in petrol retail prices across various locations. The company also launched a fuel distribution scheme that includes free nationwide delivery of petroleum products to dispensing stations. NUPENG, however, claims the initiative is designed to force other employers of petroleum truck drivers out of business, leaving only those employed by Dangote’s transport company, DTCDA.

The union had previously threatened a fresh strike, alleging that Dangote Refinery reneged on its resolutions. Relations between NUPENG and the Dangote Group have been strained over issues of worker unionisation and employment. In response, the Dangote Refinery dismissed the union’s claims, stating it has not refused workers the right to unionise.

The dispute has significant implications for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. NUPENG’s allegations suggest that Dangote’s initiatives may aim to consolidate market share and squeeze out smaller players. As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain how the conflict will be resolved and what impact it will have on the sector as a whole.

The Nigerian oil and gas sector has long been plagued by pricing, employment, and unionisation challenges, and the current dispute reflects these deeper issues. Stakeholders must work together to address these challenges and create a more stable, equitable environment for all participants. Meanwhile, NUPENG has urged Nigerians to be cautious of Dangote’s initiatives, warning that they are designed to deceive and manipulate the market. The union’s warnings indicate that the conflict is far from over, and further developments are expected in the coming days and weeks.
