The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has expressed concerns over Nigeria’s leadership, stating that the country has been unfortunate in having quality leaders for an extended period. Speaking at the second Kano International Poetry Festival, held in Kano on Saturday, Emir Sanusi described Nigeria’s leaders as “lousy” for many years.
According to the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, good governance is crucial to addressing the country’s current challenges. He emphasized that a nation’s progress is directly tied to the quality of its leadership, saying, “You rise and fall with the quality of your leadership.” Emir Sanusi pointed out that Nigeria has had ineffective leaders, which has hindered the country’s development.
The emir also commended the federal government’s decision to remove fuel subsidies, stating that it would have led to bankruptcy if not implemented. He criticized the legislature for wasting time on unimportant issues and engaging in petty debates. Emir Sanusi urged the youth to take charge and bring about change, saying they have the power to “retire” the old leaders and assume leadership roles.
