The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, warned that Nigeria has been unlucky in having quality leaders for an extended period. Speaking at the second Kano International Poetry Festival on Saturday, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria described the country’s leaders as “lousy” for many years and stressed that good governance is essential to tackling Nigeria’s current challenges. “You rise and fall with the quality of your leadership,” he said, adding that a nation’s progress is directly tied to the caliber of its rulers.
Sanusi highlighted the detrimental impact of ineffective leadership on the nation’s development and praised the federal government’s decision to remove fuel subsidies, arguing that maintaining them would have led to bankruptcy. He also criticized the legislature for squandering time on trivial matters and engaging in petty debates.
Calling on the youth to take charge, the emir urged them to “retire” the old leaders and assume leadership roles themselves. With Nigeria grappling with economic and political instability, his remarks underscore the urgent need for effective leadership and good governance to ensure the country’s progress. As the nation navigates its challenges, the demand for quality leadership and greater youth involvement is likely to remain a pressing issue.
