Kenya Politics: Gachagua Challenges Ruto Presidency Bid

In a significant development, former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced his intention to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. Speaking in Murang’a, Gachagua positioned himself as the most capable candidate to end Ruto’s presidency after a single term, setting the stage for a intense political battle within the ruling coalition’s support base.

Gachagua’s declaration was unequivocal, stating that he has agreed to run for the presidency of Kenya. He claimed that his bid is a response to a national demand, with Kenyans determining that he is the individual with the courage and ability to defeat President Ruto. This move marks the culmination of weeks of intensified campaigning by Gachagua, who has been courting support from his Mount Kenya backyard, a critical voting bloc that was instrumental in Ruto’s 2022 victory.

Gachagua’s ambitions are backed by a concrete political strategy, which includes using the newly launched Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) as his platform for the presidential run. He is expected to forge alliances with prominent leaders who have also expressed presidential interest, including Gusii leader Fred Matiang’i, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Trade Minister Mukhisa Kituyi.

The former Deputy President also launched a scathing attack on President Ruto, accusing him of a plot to weaken the Mount Kenya region’s political influence. Gachagua claimed that the President is behind a scheme to sponsor leaders from the area to form splinter parties, with the alleged goal of fragmenting the region’s unified voting power in the 2027 elections.

However, Gachagua faces a significant legal and constitutional obstacle, as his impeachment as Deputy President by the National Assembly still stands. For his presidential ambition to be legally viable, this impeachment must be overturned by the courts. Until a judicial decision nullifies the parliamentary action, his candidacy presents a formidable uphill battle.

Gachagua’s declaration sets the stage for a fiercely contested election, pitting a sitting president against his former deputy in a fight for the soul of their key demographic. The political landscape in Kenya is now poised for a intense and unpredictable contest, with Gachagua rallying his base and building alliances. The outcome of this election will have significant implications for Kenya’s political future, and the world will be watching as the drama unfolds.
