Strike: SSANU, NASU give Nigerian Govt seven-say ultimatum

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non‑Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have issued a seven‑day strike notice to the federal government over unresolved issues affecting non‑academic staff in universities. In a letter dated 12 September 2025, the unions reminded the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, of a previous communication sent on 18 June 2025 that called for intervention in outstanding labor matters.

The Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU met with the Minister on 4 July 2025 to discuss several grievances. The unions highlighted the unjust disbursement of N50 billion in earned allowances, the non‑payment of withheld salaries and salary increments, and the need to renegotiate the 2009 agreements between the federal government and the unions.

The unions have given the federal government a seven‑day ultimatum, effective from 15 September 2025, to address these demands. If their grievances are not resolved, they have warned that they will commence a series of industrial actions, including strikes.

The strike notice represents the culmination of prolonged negotiations, with the unions seeking a fair and just resolution to long‑standing issues that they deem critical to the well‑being of non‑academic university staff. A potential strike could have significant implications for Nigeria’s university system, prompting calls for the government to act swiftly and prevent disruption to academic activities.

The situation is being closely monitored, and any developments will be reported as they unfold. With the seven‑day deadline now underway, the clock is ticking for the government to find a solution and avert a potentially damaging strike.
