Prominent Nigerian politician Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has voiced alarm over an alleged plan by President Bola Tinubu to appoint a recently retired Court of Appeal judge as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Galadima described the nominee as having a record of judicial bias and “notoriety,” warning that such an appointment could trigger political instability and undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
During a live interview on Arise TV, Galadima urged the government to reconsider the nomination, arguing that the credibility of the upcoming elections would be compromised. He criticized the current administration for its alleged disregard for the rule of law and accused the leadership of INEC of being compromised in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to Galadima, the electoral body has already been rigged to benefit the APC, citing the appointment of an acting national chairman who previously worked for the party.
Galadima contended that these developments threaten the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system and could lead to chaos if the alleged plan proceeds. He expressed concerns that the government intends to destabilize the opposition and is not prepared to organize a free and fair election. Despite these worries, the NNPP stalwart remains confident in his party’s prospects, especially in Kano State, where former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso continues to enjoy popularity.
The allegations underscore ongoing concerns about INEC’s independence and the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.
