UCL: Kompany reacts to Maresca's treatment of Sterling at Chelsea

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has weighed in on Raheem Sterling’s current situation at Chelsea. The English winger has been training away from the Blues’ first‑team squad after manager Enzo Maresca excluded him. Sterling’s attempts to secure a transfer during the summer were unsuccessful, meaning he will remain at Stamford Bridge until at least January.

Kompany and Sterling were teammates at Manchester City, where they spent four seasons together and won six major trophies, including two Premier League titles. Ahead of Bayern’s Champions League match against Chelsea on Wednesday, Kompany addressed Sterling’s plight during a pre‑match press briefing. “I have a lot of respect for Enzo and my colleagues at Chelsea, and I understand that making decisions as a coach is not easy,” he said. “However, Raheem is one of my former teammates, and that bond remains.” He also recalled playing with Leroy Sane and Sterling at City, describing them as “devastating” in the Premier League.

Kompany expressed hope that Sterling can turn his career around, showcase his quality and find a suitable situation where he can thrive. Maresca has already made it clear that Sterling, along with Axel Disasi and David Datro Fofana, is not part of his plans for Chelsea. Sterling spent last season on loan at Arsenal but was unable to secure a permanent transfer, leaving his future in doubt.

The exclusion of Sterling from Chelsea’s main squad has sparked interest in his potential next moves, with the January transfer window offering an opportunity to reassess his options. For now, he will continue to train away from the first team, awaiting a resolution to his situation as attention turns to the upcoming Champions League clash between Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
