Public schools will resume with improved facilities - Ogun commissioner assures

The Ogun State government has issued a public alert about a surge in diphtheria cases across the state. Commissioner for Health Dr. Tomi Coker warned residents that this highly contagious bacterial infection can be transmitted through close contact, sneezing, or coughing, and, if left untreated, may lead to severe consequences, including death.

Symptoms of diphtheria include a sore throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, fever, a swollen neck, and a thick grey or white coating in the throat or nose. The infection is preventable through vaccination, good personal hygiene, and avoiding contact with infected individuals. Dr. Coker emphasized the importance of vaccination, urging parents to ensure their children receive all recommended routine immunizations and encouraging adults who missed their vaccines to get protected.

Residents are advised to practice regular hand washing, cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing, and avoid close contact with sick people. If anyone shows diphtheria‑like symptoms, they should keep a safe distance and encourage the person to seek medical care immediately. The commissioner warned against self‑medication and stressed the need to report to the nearest health facility if symptoms develop.

The state government and its development partners are working to ensure public safety as they contain the outbreak. By taking these precautions—vaccination, hygiene, and early treatment—residents can help prevent the spread of diphtheria and protect their communities. The alert serves as a reminder of the importance of public‑health awareness and preventive measures, and encourages vigilance and cooperation between the government and residents to maintain safety and curb further cases.
