Jose Mourinho received a two-match ban on Wednesday following his outburst against the referee during Roma’s 2-1 loss to Cremonese. The Portuguese manager was shown a red card at half-time of Tuesday’s disappointing defeat, where he expressed his frustration towards the match official. This result caused Roma to drop out of the Serie A top three, placing them fifth in the standings, just one point behind city rivals Lazio.
Serie A clarified the reasons for the ban, which also included a fine of 10,000 euros. The league stated that Mourinho had “vehemently and in a provocative manner contested a refereeing decision.” The statement further noted that he exhibited a similarly combative demeanor when he was red-carded. Additionally, at the end of the match, Mourinho entered the referees’ dressing room without permission and made seriously offensive remarks.
Cremonese’s victory marked their first league win of the season, allowing them to move off the bottom of the table. They are now one point above Sampdoria but still eight points behind Spezia, who are just above the relegation zone.
