Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) Acting Commissioner General Batsirayi Chadzingwa has called for a revival of tax morale across all sectors of the economy. Speaking at a breakfast meeting with stakeholders at the close of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo, he highlighted how technology now makes it easier to detect corrupt activities such as false declarations, understating profits and tax evasion—practices that have been common among both taxpayers and tax administrators.
Chadzingwa stressed that corruption is a two‑way street, involving both the giver and the receiver, and warned the public against enticing ZIMRA officials into unethical conduct. He underscored the need to cultivate a culture of compliance with tax laws to support the country’s development, emphasizing that professionalism, innovation, commitment, integrity, transparency and fairness are essential for success. Vices such as corruption, smuggling and tax evasion, he said, must be tackled with a zero‑tolerance approach.
The Acting Commissioner General cautioned against bribing ZIMRA officials, describing it as unnecessary and unethical. He noted that tax evasion can be far more costly in the long run, as those caught face severe penalties. Instead, he urged taxpayers to comply with the prescribed terms, pointing out that the revenue collected is vital for Zimbabwe’s infrastructural development. Tax collection, he explained, enables the government to fund key national priorities such as infrastructure, education and healthcare.
Chadzingwa thanked individuals and businesses that consistently meet their tax obligations and assured those still finding their way that ZIMRA is ready to provide guidance and assistance. He reinforced the importance of tax compliance in building Zimbabwe’s legacy and paving the way for future generations, encouraging early engagement with ZIMRA to avoid penalties and interest. He reiterated the authority’s commitment to supporting taxpayers on their journey toward full compliance.
