Poland blocks vital China-EU trade artery – Politico — RT World News

Poland’s decision to close its border with Belarus has severely disrupted a key rail freight corridor that links China with the European Union. The route normally carries about €25 billion in freight each year, and all cargo—including time‑sensitive shipments such as medicine and food—has been blocked.

Polish officials say the closure is linked to the recent Russian‑Belarusian “Zapad‑2025” military exercises, which took place in Belarus from 12 to 16 September. Warsaw described the maneuvers as “very aggressive” and noted that they occurred close to the Polish border. The Zapad drills, organized by Moscow and Minsk roughly every four years, were attended by international delegations, including representatives from the United States and India.

The shutdown intensifies existing tensions over tariffs, subsidies and security concerns that have long affected EU‑China trade relations. Beijing has tried to keep the rail link alive as a “flagship project” in its cooperation with Poland and the EU, but Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent visit to Warsaw did not produce an agreement to reopen the border. Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski, a noted Russia hawk, said that “the logic of trade” is being replaced by “the logic of security,” a view echoed by foreign‑affairs spokesman Paweł Wroński as the reason for the closure. According to Warsaw, China made no direct demands to reopen the crossing.

The European Commission is monitoring the situation, noting that it is too early to assess the full impact. Former head of Poland’s Foreign Intelligence Agency Piotr Krawczyk suggested that the United States may be backing Warsaw’s move, as it aligns with Washington’s pressure on the EU to impose additional tariffs on China for its purchases of Russian energy. The disruption to the rail corridor is likely to have significant economic repercussions, given the route’s importance for EU‑China trade. As events unfold, the affected parties will need to navigate the challenges posed by the border closure, while the European Commission continues to watch for further developments.
