Libyan naval operations force rescues 35 migrants near Tunisian border

The Libyan Zuwara Naval Operations Force carried out a rescue mission near the Tunisian border on Tuesday, saving 35 migrants in the western town of Zuwara. The operation, overseen by the Tripoli‑based government, rescued five women and a child, according to the naval authority. Footage released by the force showed migrants being lifted onto boats and receiving treatment on land.

This rescue highlights the ongoing migrant crisis in the region, with Libya serving as a primary transit point for people fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East. The mission follows a tragic incident on Sunday, when a boat carrying Sudanese refugees caught fire and sank off Libya’s coast, killing at least 50 people, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The IOM’s Missing Migrants Project reports that, in the past eight months, at least 434 migrants have been confirmed dead and 611 are missing off Libya’s shores.

Libya’s strategic location makes it a key crossing point for migrants attempting to reach Europe, while the country’s instability and weak border controls have contributed to the high number of incidents and fatalities. Humanitarian groups, including the IOM, are working to provide assistance and advocate for safer, more regulated migration pathways.

The recent rescue and the Sunday tragedy underscore the need for continued international attention and support to address the migrant crisis. As the situation evolves, prioritizing the safety and well‑being of migrants and seeking durable solutions remain essential. The international community must stay committed to delivering humanitarian aid and strengthening migration management in Libya and beyond.
