Congo Ebola deaths top 31 as authorities rush to vaccinate

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a sharp increase in Ebola cases in southern Congo, with 31 deaths among 38 confirmed infections. This nearly doubles the casualty rate from the previous week, when 16 cases were recorded. The disease is spreading rapidly, and more than 900 contacts have been identified so far.

Vaccination efforts began in the affected region on Sunday, providing crucial protection for healthcare workers and contacts. To date, over 500 individuals have been vaccinated. Dr. Patrick Otim, a WHO Africa program official, emphasized that immunization is essential to prevent further transmission.

The outbreak was first announced by Congolese authorities on 5 September in Bulape, a locality in the south‑central Kasai region near Angola. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the disease expanded from two districts to four last week. WHO has been working to transport vaccines to Bulape, but limited storage infrastructure has created logistical challenges. An additional batch of vaccines, approved by the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision, is expected to arrive between Friday and Sunday. Sheillah Nsasiirwe, WHO Africa’s Health Emergency Officer for Immunization, noted that accessibility issues have delayed vaccine delivery, though officials are striving to implement vaccination as quickly as possible.

The Congo Ebola outbreak underscores the need for rapid response and effective vaccination strategies to curb further spread. With WHO and other health organizations collaborating, efforts are focused on protecting vulnerable populations and preventing additional cases. As the situation evolves, international health authorities will continue to monitor the outbreak and provide updates on the effectiveness of vaccination and other response measures.
