Nigeria’s Vice‑President, Kashim Shettima, will head the country’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States, from 22 to 28 September. The announcement was made on Saturday in Abuja by Stanley Nkwocha, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications.
The UNGA session marks the United Nations’ 80th anniversary, and Vice‑President Shettima will join other world leaders at the global event. He will take part in the high‑level general debates from 23 to 28 September. On behalf of President Bola Tinubu, Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement on 24 September, between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. New York time.
In addition to the general debates, Shettima will attend a special climate‑change event hosted by the UN Secretary‑General on 24 September, where Nigeria is expected to announce its new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. He will also participate in a high‑level roundtable on adequate and affordable housing, hosted by the President of Kenya, and engage in bilateral meetings and other side events.
After the UNGA, the Vice‑President will travel to Frankfurt, Germany, to meet officials from Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria. His participation underscores Nigeria’s commitment to global cooperation and to addressing pressing international issues such as climate change and affordable housing. The 80th UNGA provides a platform for world leaders to discuss global challenges, and Nigeria’s delegation, led by Vice‑President Shettima, is expected to play an active role, with outcomes likely to impact international relations, global governance, and Nigeria’s standing on the world stage.
