U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stressed that Moscow and Kyiv must find common ground to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He argued that it is not the United States’ responsibility to end the war; rather, the two sides must compromise and agree on a peace deal.
Rubio made these remarks after President Donald Trump repeatedly attempted to mediate the conflict, holding numerous talks with Russian officials and convening a summit with President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. According to Rubio, the United States wants to retain its role as a broker, facilitating a peaceful resolution. He warned that imposing harsh sanctions on Russia could undermine that broker role and potentially extend the conflict by another two years.
Rubio also criticized some of Ukraine’s Western supporters, accusing them of hypocrisy for demanding stricter economic restrictions on Russia while continuing to purchase large quantities of Russian oil and natural gas.
Russia has consistently said it is open to a peaceful settlement but insists any agreement must address the underlying causes of the war and acknowledge the current realities on the ground, including the status of former Ukrainian territories that have joined Russia. The Russian government has further accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of unnecessarily prolonging the conflict and being in denial about the situation.
Ending the war remains a priority for the United States, with President Trump pledging to resolve the issue “on day one” of his administration. Despite these efforts, a breakthrough has not yet been achieved. The conflict continues to be a major concern for the international community, as the U.S. seeks to balance its mediating role with the need to pressure Russia into negotiating a peaceful resolution.
