The National Unity Platform (NUP) is urging Ugandans to maintain peace and turn out in large numbers as party leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu prepares for his nomination in the upcoming 2026 presidential election. NUP Secretary‑General David Lewis Rubongoya said today marks a significant moment for the opposition, with Kyagulanyi set to challenge incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled for nearly four decades. Rubongoya emphasized the importance of peaceful participation, encouraging citizens to “remain peaceful, but at the same time, enjoy the day and come out in large numbers” in Natete, where the event is being held.
The party will also use the occasion to pay tribute to its late deputy president, Jolly Mugisha, who died on the same date last year. A small function will be held to honor Mugisha’s memory when Kyagulanyi arrives. Later today, Kyagulanyi’s nomination is expected to take place at the Electoral Commission headquarters, marking a crucial step in his presidential campaign.
Kyagulanyi’s candidacy has attracted significant attention, especially after his prominent performance in the 2021 contest. As one of the main challengers to President Museveni in the 2026 elections, his nomination sets the stage for a potentially intense campaign season. The NUP’s call for peaceful participation underscores the need for stability and calm during this critical period.
As the electoral process unfolds, Ugandans will be closely watching developments, and the international community will be monitoring the situation. Ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful election is essential for Uganda’s democratic development, and the NUP’s efforts to mobilize supporters and promote peaceful participation will be crucial in shaping the outcome.
