The Lagos State Government has set an 18‑month deadline for traders at Computer Village in Ikeja to relocate to a new permanent site in Katangowa. The announcement was made by Gbolahan Oki, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, during a stakeholders’ meeting with market leaders and traders.
Oki explained that the state has invested in the necessary infrastructure and facilities at the Katangowa site to create a conducive business environment. The relocation aims to address the fact that Computer Village currently operates on land originally designated for residential use, which was converted into a commercial hub without formal government approval. The new site spans 15 hectares, is strategically located near essential resources for businesses, and will provide a structured market environment that supports growth while addressing environmental and urban‑planning concerns.
Plans to move traders from Ikeja to Katangowa have been in development since 2006, but progress was delayed by the slow completion of the new site. Oki emphasized Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu’s commitment to inclusive governance, noting that the meeting was convened to inform and involve traders in the government’s plans.
The relocation is part of the state’s broader effort to promote infrastructure development and improve the welfare of Lagosians. With the deadline set, traders are expected to cooperate with the government to ensure a smooth transition. The success of the move will depend on the cooperation of all stakeholders and will be closely watched for its potential impact on the livelihoods of thousands of traders and the overall state economy.
