YIAGA Africa, a non‑profit organization, has warned that Nigeria’s 2027 general elections could become the most compromised and costly in the country’s history. Executive Director Samson Itodo voiced this concern on Channels Television’s program *Politics Today*, focusing on the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the current state of elections in Nigeria. He stressed the need for careful management of the electoral process to avoid potential complications.
According to Itodo, public trust in the electoral system is at its lowest point. The impending departure of INEC Chairman Prof. Yakubu Mahmoud, who has served for ten years, is expected to create a leadership vacuum. Itodo questioned whether a newly appointed chairman would have sufficient time to settle into the role before the 2027 elections, given the timing of the appointment. Moreover, several commissioners are slated to leave their positions next year, while others will depart on the eve of the elections, further highlighting the precarious situation.
The 2027 general elections are likely to attract close scrutiny both domestically and internationally because of their potential impact on Nigeria’s democratic process. As the country prepares for these elections, YIAGA Africa’s concerns underscore the importance of ensuring the integrity and transparency of the electoral process. With the elections still over a year away, the coming months will be crucial in determining the trajectory of Nigeria’s democratic development.
