Terrorism: Private hospital ready to admit, treat Nnamdi Kanu - IPOB lawyer

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, may receive medical attention at a private hospital in Abuja, according to his legal team. This development comes amid controversy over Kanu’s access to proper medical care.

Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, told journalists in Abuja that a private hospital in the capital has expressed readiness to admit Kanu for treatment, though the facility’s name will not be disclosed for security reasons. This option is being considered after the Nigerian government opposed an application to move Kanu to the National Hospital for medical attention. The application to transfer him to the National Hospital remains pending, Ejimakor said.

The Nigerian Medical Association is expected to submit a report and provide an opinion on Kanu’s medical condition. A court‑ordered committee or panel, which includes a member from the National Hospital, will review the report.

Kanu is currently facing trial for terrorism at an Abuja Federal High Court. His legal team has raised concerns about his deteriorating health, emphasizing the need for urgent medical attention. The possibility of treating him at a private hospital in Abuja may offer an alternative solution to his medical needs.

The situation highlights the ongoing challenges of ensuring Kanu receives adequate medical care while in custody. As the trial continues, the outcome of the application to transfer him to a medical facility remains uncertain, and the next steps will depend on the court’s decision regarding his treatment and the ongoing proceedings.
