Police Commissioner Warns Against Harassment Extortion

The Imo State Police Command has issued a stern warning to its officers and men against engaging in unlawful activities, including phone searches, extortion, and harassment, particularly against young people. Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma emphasized the importance of respecting the rights of all individuals, especially suspects, and adhering to constitutional provisions and global best practices.

The police chief reiterated the ban on the use of unmarked vehicles by tactical teams and prohibited the use of shuttle buses for patrols. He stated that complaints of harassment, intimidation, and extortion linked to these practices will be thoroughly investigated, and offending officers will face disciplinary action. Additionally, commanders will be held accountable for any misconduct by their personnel.

Danjuma also cautioned against the over-detention of suspects, stressing that their rights are sacrosanct and must be respected at all times. He directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Unit Commanders to warn and supervise their personnel, ensuring that any instances of misconduct are addressed promptly.

The Imo State Police Command’s commitment to professionalism and accountability is in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police. The Command has assured the public of its determination to safeguard their rights while maintaining law and order. This move is aimed at promoting a positive relationship between the police and the community, particularly among young people who have often been victims of harassment and extortion.

The police command’s statement, issued by Public Relations Officer DSP Henry Okoye, serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding human rights and adhering to professional standards in law enforcement. By taking a firm stance against misconduct and promoting accountability, the Imo State Police Command is working towards rebuilding trust with the public and ensuring a safer, more respectful environment for all citizens.
