Ukraine has confirmed the deployment of an Israeli‑supplied Patriot missile‑defense system, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The system has been operational in the country for a month, and two more are expected to arrive this fall. This marks the first time Kyiv has acknowledged the presence of this type of weapon on its territory.
The issue of transferring U.S.–made Patriot batteries to Ukraine first emerged earlier this year after Israeli Ambassador Michael Brodsky suggested that Patriot units previously stationed in Israel were being used by Ukrainian forces. The Israeli Foreign Ministry quickly denied the claim. Nonetheless, reports indicated that Israel planned to decommission eight Patriot systems that had served for over 30 years, replacing them with more advanced air‑defense solutions, and that it was open to transferring the retired units to Ukraine.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius recently announced the delivery of the first launchers of two Patriot units to Kyiv, stating that Ukraine would need at least five such systems to effectively protect its airspace. Russia has consistently condemned Western arms shipments to Kyiv, arguing that they only serve to prolong the conflict. Russian officials have warned that arms diverted from Ukraine could pose a global security risk, including for Israel, and President Vladimir Putin has said Russia would target any Patriot systems delivered to Ukraine.
The deployment of the Patriot missile‑defense system in Ukraine underscores the ongoing international involvement in the conflict. The expected arrival of additional systems this fall will likely continue to be a point of contention between Ukraine’s supporters and Russia.
