A prominent leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement in Kano State, Nigeria, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Alhaji Amadu Danfulani, who headed the movement in Gobirawa Ward, Dala Local Government Area, announced his decision to join the APC at the party’s state headquarters in Kano on Tuesday. Danfulani said his disappointment with the Kwankwasiyya Movement and its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, prompted the defection. He also criticized the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), which currently governs the state, accusing it of implementing “anti‑people’s policies.”
The APC Zonal Chairman for Kano Central, Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Ungoggo, received Danfulani into the party. Representing state chairman Abdullahi Abbas, Ungoggo welcomed Danfulani and his supporters, emphasizing that the APC remains open to members of other parties who wish to defect, provided they adhere to the party’s rules and constitution. Other notable APC leaders present included Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, Managing Director of the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, and Alhaji Munir Haruna, APC chairman of Dala Local Government. Danfulani was accompanied by several supporters who also left the NNPP for the APC.
The defection of Danfulani and his supporters is viewed as a significant development in Kano State’s political landscape. The APC, one of Nigeria’s major parties, has been working to strengthen its presence in the state and is expected to continue welcoming members from other parties as it builds a broad coalition ahead of future elections. Meanwhile, the NNPP will need to reassess its strategies and policies to address the concerns of former members and retain the support of its remaining constituents. As Kano’s political terrain evolves, the actions of key players like Danfulani and the APC will be closely watched by analysts and observers.
