2027: Nigerian politicians commit 90 per cent of crimes in elections – PAACA provides solution

The Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) has urged political parties, civil‑society organizations and other stakeholders to thoroughly review the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) election guidelines ahead of the 2027 general elections. The centre argues that such scrutiny is essential for preserving the credibility of the electoral process. PAACA notes that a large share of election‑related crimes—about 90 %—are committed by politicians, underscoring the need to empower citizens with accurate information so they are not manipulated and can make informed decisions with confidence.

PAACA’s appeal follows an event held in Sokoto in collaboration with the Federal Government and the MacArthur Foundation. The gathering provided a platform for stakeholders to engage with INC’s guidelines and examine the electoral process. Umar Yusuf Garba, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Sokoto State, represented by Abdullahi Sale Dawa, highlighted the event’s importance in deepening understanding of electoral procedures. Alhaji Babangida Kurfi, Sokoto State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), also praised the timing of the event, saying it allowed participants to reflect on electoral reforms, build on successes and identify areas for improvement.

PAACA’s initiative is expected to contribute to free and fair elections in 2027. As the election approaches, the centre’s call to action reminds stakeholders to familiarize themselves with INEC’s guidelines. The success of this effort will depend on the collective actions of citizens, political parties and civil‑society groups to promote transparency and accountability throughout the electoral process.
