Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North and a former Labour Congress leader, has weighed in on the recent feud between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and Dangote Refinery. In an interview with Arise TV, Oshiomhole said that PENGASSAN’s approach to its grievances was misguided, as it led to a shutdown of the country’s oil sector. While the union has the right to protect its members, he argued it should not have done so in a way that jeopardized other workers’ jobs and threatened the Nigerian economy.

Oshiomhole pointed out that the union’s decision to direct members to cut crude gas supply to Dangote Refinery was excessive and harmed innocent people, such as tomato sellers who rely on fuel to transport their goods. The dispute began when the refinery dismissed 800 workers for belonging to the union. In retaliation, PENGASSAN downed tools for two days, disrupting the oil sector. After federal government intervention, the strike was suspended and a truce was reached between the parties.

The senator’s comments underscore the need for unions to balance the protection of their members’ interests with the broader economic impact of their actions. He also highlighted the importance of alternative dispute‑resolution mechanisms that do not hurt innocent parties. The feud has drawn attention to the challenges faced by workers in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, a critical component of the national economy where any disruption can have far‑reaching consequences.

As the sector evolves, stakeholders—including unions, employers, and government agencies—must collaborate to address grievances and find mutually beneficial solutions. The suspension of the strike and the truce between PENGASSAN and Dangote Refinery are positive developments, and it is hoped the two parties will continue working together to resolve their differences. The government’s intervention further demonstrates its commitment to maintaining stability in the oil and gas sector, which is essential for Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
