The Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has elected former Acting Governor Tunji Odeyemi as its new chairman. The election took place during the state congress in Ado‑Ekiti, with more than 1,000 delegates from the 16 local government areas in attendance. Odeyemi secured 936 votes, defeating his challenger, former state legal officer Sunday Olowolafe, who received 290 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Odeyemi thanked party leaders and delegates for their support and pledged not to betray the confidence placed in him. He stressed the need for unity, discipline, and loyalty to the party’s ideals, urging the PDP to move beyond past divisions and focus on delivering good governance to the people of Ekiti. He warned that the state is in dire need of rescue from maladministration, poverty, and neglect, and that the PDP must rise to meet this challenge.
As chairman, Odeyemi promised to run an inclusive and transparent administration, emphasizing the strengthening of grassroots structures, empowerment of youth and women, and the promotion of internal democracy. He also committed to maintaining an open‑door policy so that all voices are heard and valued.
Odeyemi’s election is significant because it comes ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State. The PDP aims to reclaim its position as a major political force, and his experience as a former Acting Governor positions him to provide the leadership needed to reposition the party for success. He has called on all party members to close ranks, work together, and restore prosperity, dignity, and hope to the people of Ekiti. As the PDP prepares for the 2026 election, Odeyemi’s ability to unify the party and deliver effective governance will be closely watched and will be crucial to the party’s prospects.
