Judiciary remains hope of common man -- Diri — Daily Nigerian

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri emphasized the judiciary’s role in upholding justice and fairness in society during the opening of the 2025/2026 legal year in Yenagoa. He urged judicial officers to remain upright and committed to their duties, expressing confidence that, with God’s guidance, the judiciary will exceed expectations and deliver sound judgments. The governor described the judiciary as the common man’s last hope and stressed that its trust must be maintained. He appealed to Nigerians, especially Bayelsans, to allow the judiciary to function independently and impartially, noting that autonomy is essential for delivering justice to all, regardless of social class.

Chief Judge of Bayelsa, Justice Matilda Ayemieye, thanked the state government for its support in preserving judicial independence. She highlighted the cordial working relationship among the judiciary, the Nigeria Bar Association, the Legislature, and the Executive. Justice Ayemieye said the new legal year offers an opportunity for the judiciary to assess its performance, strengthen the rule of law, and strive for excellence.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Biriyai Dambo (SAN), commended both the bar and the bench for their hard work in ensuring justice in Bayelsa. He noted that the current administration has prioritized the welfare of judicial officers and has settled all outstanding debts to law officers, reaffirming the government’s commitment to enhancing the state’s justice system.

The commencement of the new legal year marks a significant milestone for the Bayelsa judiciary as it seeks to consolidate its position among the nation’s best. With state‑government support and the dedication of judicial officers, the judiciary is poised to play a crucial role in upholding justice and fairness in Bayelsa State. As the legal year begins, the focus will be on strengthening the rule of law, improving justice delivery, and maintaining public trust.
