Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa death probe underway in Paris

South Africa has dispatched a team of seasoned investigators to Paris to take part in the inquiry into the death of its ambassador, Nathi Mthethwa. The 58‑year‑old diplomat was found dead in the inner courtyard of the Hyatt Regency hotel on Tuesday morning after falling from the 22nd floor. National police commissioner Fannie Masemola announced that five senior police officers will work alongside French investigators to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.

Mthethwa’s wife reported him missing on Monday after receiving a troubling message from him. According to a French prosecutor, the message said Mthethwa apologized and indicated his intention to end his life. While early findings suggest the death may have been deliberate, concerns have been raised about possible foul play.

Mthethwa’s career was marked by controversy. He served as an ally of former President Jacob Zuma, who faces corruption charges, and, as police minister, oversaw the 2012 Marikana massacre in which 34 striking miners were killed. He was also implicated in wrongdoing by several judicial commissions. Just two weeks before his death, testimony before the Madlanga Commission—investigating political interference in policing—accused him of obstructing justice during his 2011 tenure as police minister. It remains unclear whether he was scheduled to appear as a witness before the commission.

Mthethwa’s family is awaiting the completion of formalities before his remains can be repatriated from France. The investigation continues, with South African and French authorities cooperating to determine the circumstances of the incident. The ambassador’s death carries significant implications for South Africa, given his complex and often contentious career.
