Supreme Court judgement: Confusion as Anyanwu Returns as PDP National Secretary

The Peoples Democratic Party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, warned the party’s Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, against making statements that could mislead the public and deepen internal divisions. Ologunagba had reportedly downplayed Anyanwu’s role, claiming his responsibilities were limited to administrative duties such as managing day‑to‑day activities, handling correspondence, and ensuring directives were carried out. He also asserted that Anyanwu could not summon meetings or issue press statements without authorization, framing his remarks as a response to a perceived misunderstanding of party roles.

In reaction, Anyanwu’s media aide, Ikenna Onuoha, dismissed Ologunagba’s comments as “ridiculous and ignorant.” Onuoha argued that the statements revealed a lack of understanding of the PDP Constitution regarding the National Secretary’s duties and functions. He cited section 36(1) of the 2017 amended PDP Constitution, which outlines the significant role of the National Secretary in party operations, and emphasized that Anyanwu’s actions are guided by this constitutional framework. Onuoha urged Ologunagba to focus on constructive strategies to strengthen the party rather than engage in divisive rhetoric.

The exchange underscores the importance of clear communication and a proper grasp of party roles to avoid misunderstandings and promote unity. As one of Nigeria’s major political parties, the PDP has been working to reinforce its structure and operations, emphasizing cohesion and effective communication to achieve its goals. Clarifying responsibilities within the party is essential to prevent confusion and ensure that all members work toward common objectives. As the PDP navigates its internal dynamics, its leaders must prioritize constructive dialogue and a deep understanding of the party’s constitution and operations. By doing so, the PDP can build a stronger, more unified front, which is vital for its success in Nigerian politics.
