In a recent interview with CNN, Grammy‑winning singer and songwriter Tems opened up about the challenges she faced at the start of her music career. The 30‑year‑old, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, said it was difficult for people to take her seriously as both a vocalist and a producer. She often felt overlooked and unsupported, describing a long period in which she didn’t feel safe, seen, or backed by the industry.
Tems emphasized that authenticity is the foundation of her artistry. She explained that staying true to herself is non‑negotiable and has been essential in shaping her career decisions and direction.
Drawing from her own experiences of invisibility and exclusion, Tems launched The Leading Vibe, a platform designed to empower women who work behind the scenes in music. The initiative aims to create more opportunities for female producers, managers, and sound engineers, helping them gain recognition in a male‑dominated field. According to Tems, many talented women are capable of filling these roles but remain unseen; her goal is to make them visible and reshape the narrative surrounding women in music.
The Leading Vibe plans to expand beyond Nigeria, with Kenya identified as the next destination. Tems believes that giving women the chance to be seen and heard will transform the music industry, fostering a more inclusive and diverse environment where women have equal opportunities to succeed. As the initiative grows, it is poised to promote greater representation and acknowledgment of women’s contributions to music.
