Lawmaker Resigns from PDP Amid Internal Conflicts

A Nigerian lawmaker, Sadiq Abdullahi, representing Sabon Gari Federal Constituency, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) citing internal conflicts and loss of direction. Abdullahi announced his resignation on Monday, stating that the party’s prolonged factionalism has hindered his ability to effectively serve his constituents.

The lawmaker, who serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), submitted his resignation letter to his ward chairman. In the letter, Abdullahi expressed his gratitude to the PDP for the opportunity to serve under its platform, acknowledging the support and experiences he gained during his time with the party.

Abdullahi’s resignation follows that of former National Secretary Sunday Udeh Okoye, and comes amidst growing discontent within the PDP over its handling of internal leadership disputes and strategic direction ahead of future elections. The party has been plagued by factionalism, which has culminated in a prolonged crisis, affecting the ability of its members to perform their duties optimally.

The twin resignations highlight the deepening internal conflicts within the PDP, which have been ongoing for some time. The party’s inability to resolve its internal disputes has raised concerns about its preparedness for future elections. As the political landscape in Nigeria continues to evolve, the PDP’s internal struggles may have significant implications for its prospects in upcoming polls.

Abdullahi’s decision to leave the PDP is likely to be seen as a significant blow to the party, given his position as a federal lawmaker. His resignation may prompt other party members to reassess their allegiance to the PDP, potentially leading to further defections. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the PDP will address its internal conflicts and restore stability within the party.
