Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain committed and united despite recent defections. He made this call during the inauguration of the PDP National Convention Transportation Subcommittee, which he chairs, in Abuja on Monday.
Makinde emphasized that the current challenges facing the PDP are temporary and will ultimately strengthen the party. He encouraged party members not to lose faith, stating that the difficulties will pass and the party will emerge stronger. The governor noted that the PDP remains a national party with members in every ward across Nigeria, and urged supporters to “hold their corner” for the party.
In recent months, several high-profile figures have defected from the PDP to join rival political groups, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark. Some PDP governors have also reportedly defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, Makinde said that defections do not spell the end for the PDP, but rather an opportunity to rebuild with renewed purpose and authenticity.
The governor expressed confidence that the upcoming PDP National Elective Convention, scheduled for November 15-16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, will produce capable and visionary leaders who can restore Nigerians’ faith in the PDP and the country. He urged party members to treat their assignments as acts of sacrifice toward restoring the PDP’s original vision and putting Nigeria back on the path of progress.
As chairman of the Transportation Subcommittee, Makinde’s role is crucial in ensuring the smooth movement of delegates and supporters to the convention. He accepted the role as part of his continued commitment to the party, reflecting on his previous service as Secretary of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee in 2021. The success of the convention will depend on the efficiency and dedication of the subcommittee, Makinde noted.
