A disagreement has emerged in Delta State between the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) over plans to make Governor Sheriff Oborevwori the sole APC candidate for the 2027 state governorship election. Chief Julius Efeni Akpovoka, an ADC chieftain in the state, argues that the move violates principles of justice, fair play and morality, in addition to breaching the APC’s own constitutional provisions.
In contrast, Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, voiced strong support for Governor Oborevwori and President Bola Tinubu ahead of the upcoming elections. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting of the Delta State APC chapter in Asaba, Nwoko said that political leaders and the general public in Delta North are united behind Oborevwori’s bid for a second term in 2027. He emphasized the region’s commitment to backing both the governor and President Tinubu’s administration.
Akpovoka also criticized Minister of Aviation Chief Festus Keyamo for spearheading the endorsement of Oborevwori as the sole candidate. He expressed disappointment that Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, would overlook the APC’s constitutional rules on party primaries. Akpovoka pointed to Delta State’s poor infrastructure, insecurity, and inadequate health‑care and educational facilities, arguing that these issues should take precedence over endorsing a single candidate.
He warned that the people of Delta State, particularly the Urhobo, would ultimately decide their governor and would not support a “street governor” with limited vision. The dispute underscores the complexities of Delta State’s political landscape as the 2027 gubernatorial and presidential elections approach. The APC’s decision to endorse a sole candidate has sparked controversy and opposition from other parties, and the unfolding developments are likely to have significant implications for the state’s political future.
