Polygamy defended by Alibaba as promoting relationship stability

Nigerian Comedian Alibaba Shares Insights on Polygamy

Veteran comedian and actor Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, popularly known as Alibaba, has expressed his views on polygamy, highlighting its potential practical and cultural benefits. In an interview with media personality Nedu, Alibaba argued that having multiple wives can promote stability in relationships by encouraging cooperation and reducing tension among spouses.

According to Alibaba, the presence of multiple wives can lead to a more calm and composed behavior among spouses, as they are aware that there are alternative partners available. He cited traditional practices in parts of Nigeria, where some women encouraged their husbands to take additional wives to prevent infidelity and maintain harmony at home. In some cases, women would even marry young girls and gift them to their husbands to prevent them from having concubines.

Alibaba also noted that polygamy can arise out of necessity rather than choice. For instance, when a man dies, leaving behind a young wife and children, the family may ask one of the brothers to take care of the widow, leading to a polygamous relationship. This, he explained, is part of how polygamy evolved in some cultures.

While acknowledging the controversy surrounding polygamy, Alibaba emphasized that it holds value in certain social and cultural contexts. He pointed out that many people who criticize polygamy may themselves have children with multiple partners, highlighting the complexity of the issue.

Alibaba’s comments provide insight into the cultural and historical context of polygamy in Nigeria, where it remains a practiced and debated topic. His views underscore the need for a nuanced understanding of the issue, taking into account the diverse social, cultural, and economic factors that influence relationships and family structures. As the conversation around polygamy continues, Alibaba’s perspectives contribute to a more informed discussion about the practice and its implications.
