The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on Lagosians to maintain peace with one another in light of the heightened emotions following the presidential election. In a statement released on Thursday, he emphasized the importance of accommodating differing views in a thoughtful and peaceful manner.

Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the significance of Lagos, describing it as the greatest city in Nigeria and one of the largest economies in West Africa. He pointed out that despite occupying only one percent of Nigeria’s land mass—one-third of which is water—Lagos is home to ten percent of the nation’s population. He reminded citizens that they have consistently overcome challenges and thrived, not because of the obstacles they face, but in spite of them.

He reflected on the unity displayed during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Lagosians came together to support and protect one another, resulting in the safety of citizens and a low casualty rate. The governor also noted the collaborative efforts that have nurtured a creative industry, which has gained global recognition, as well as the vibrant start-up community that has given rise to new unicorn businesses.

In closing, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged citizens to remember their dual identity as both Nigerians and Lagosians. He stressed the importance of continuing to come together to maintain peace in the community.
